Our setup this year is fantastic (say hi to Smobmom).
No cars nearby but a handful of VW campers if you’re into that.

Hi Smobmom!

Looks lovely. I love a little bluegrass, but a little goes a long way with me. I don’t think I could handle a festival. Then again Im not sure I could handle a festival of any sorts. This is more my kind of crowd.

That grass looks pretty green to me. Maybe brown by the end of the weekend.

I’m not really a crowd person either, this is about all I can take for the year - it helps that there are plenty of places to escape by the river. I like that we got a pretty isolated spot for our campsite this year!

I’m just happy they remembered to turn the sprinklers off this year.

Every year I tell myself that next year I’ll go to one of the several Bean Blossom music festivals here in Indiana. Every year I lie.

Thank you for reminding me to avoid driving through Lyons this weekend.

Looks nice, what festival? Bluegrass used to be a big part of my life, and for about a 7 year period I was attending 5-8 festivals a year both for fun, as a sound guy, or in bands. Got to know a lot of great people, mostly the east coast bluegrass scene but also some nationally touring acts too. Since getting married and starting a family I haven’t really had the time, money, or desire to be into it like I used to, and it’s been a couple years since the last festival I’ve attended. I definitely miss late night picking with friends from across the country though. It’s a good scene!

I’m with you. My wife dragged me to Country Thunder this year...
I don’t care for concerts, crowds, or drunks and on top of that being as the campsites are a farm field there’s no electric so no A/C and it was over 90F with that midwest humidity. I love my wife, but I told her that she’s on her own next year if she wants to go.

Love me some bluegrass. What festival are you at?

Here’s the aftermath of the Country Thunder festival my wife dragged me to
Yours looks a lot more chill and enjoyable. I’m not big on crowds or concerts to begin with so this was less than ideal for me.

Looks like an idyllic spot - enjoy!

We went to Estes for the day and I don’t think I got out of third on 36. Thirty cars stuck behind one slowpoke.

Rockygrass. I keep saying I’m going to find some smaller ones but this one is easy to plan around (and close to my birthday) so it’s an easy excuse to go.

Ew. I went to one of the early Bonnaroos and that was similar. Too much for me.

Rockygrass! Lots of my favorites here this year!

Rockygrass always looks and sounds awesome. I’ve never been to it , but the lineup is always great. I see I’m with Her is there as well as Hawktail, I know Aiofe & Brittany Haas a little bit from being a big Crooked Still fan back in the day. Looking forward to seeing Hawtail when they come through my town next month. Frank Solivan is great, as is Noam Pikelny... and Del is always king of bluegrass in my opinion. Great, now I’m jealous!

I loooooved Crooked Still! They did a little reunion set a couple years ago here :) I also adore Noam Pikelny. I have an awesome poster from his plays Kenny Baker...etc album.

Yeah I managed to be at their last official US show before they went on Hiatus, plus several of their reunion shows. When they played Fresh Grass in 2017 I asked Britt if I could take a few photos and their manager ended up asking me to do a portrait shoot of them. Not something I do much of and I was a little intimidated on short notice, but I gave it my best shot and they ended up using it as their banner on Spotify, plus a few other places! I got to photograph their warm-up session indoors too.
Noam I don’t know as well, but I ended up getting introduced through a mutual friend and picked with him backstage at a show in NYC once. I met him a couple other times, but it was still pretty surprising when he was walking passed on the street at IBMA once and stopped to say ‘Hey, I know you, right?’. Maybe I looked like somebody important that day? I’ve found most bluegrass people are super friendly and approachable.

Ok that’s all overwhelmingly cool. I met the Punch Brothers eons ago and chatted briefly since I was “helping” a friend who worked at the Aspen Music Festival, but Thile certainly didn’t remember me when I saw him at the grocery store later! (Also who takes their mandolin grocery shopping, honestly!)
That pictures is fantastic, too!

Thanks! I’ve seen Thile a few times, but only talked to him once. As a mandolin player myself, the intimidation factor is pretty high... I will say I’ve never gone grocery shopping with a mandolin either.
